Zero Tolerance for FGM Day

Zero Tolerance for FGM

Zero Tolerance for FGM Day is on 6 February. On that day, Freedom Charity is launching Not in My Name, our first campaign track created to make prevention speakable and public.

This is the first time Freedom Charity has used music in this way: as a prevention tool people can share in minutes, and use safely in schools and communities.

Most campaigns ask people to “raise awareness”. This one asks something more direct. It asks the public to say a pledge out loud and back it with visible action.

End FGM. Not in my name.

Zero Tolerance for FGM Day: what to do

Zero Tolerance for FGM Day exists to drive action, not passive awareness. For that reason, we are asking people to do three things that are visible, shareable, and practical.

First, watch Not in My Name.
Next, wear the Red Triangle badge.
Finally, share the pledge: End FGM. Not in my name.

As a result, the message becomes public. People see it, repeat it, and act on it.

Why Freedom Charity made a campaign track

FGM is a safeguarding issue that often hides behind silence, fear, and the idea that it is not anyone else’s business. Because of that, many people hesitate, even when they want to help.

Not in My Name was written to remove that hesitation. It gives people words they can repeat, and it makes the pledge public.

In practice, a track works because it can be used safely in the places where prevention is real:

It also speaks directly to boys and men. In other words, protecting girls is not a private opinion. It is a public refusal to enable harm.

Not in My Name was written by Aneeta Prem, founder of Freedom Charity and author of Cut Flowers, as a practical prevention tool that can be shared without sensationalism.

The Red Triangle badge: a visible stand to End FGM

A message becomes real when people can act on it immediately. That is why this campaign links the track to one clear action.

The Red Triangle badge is Freedom Charity’s public symbol against FGM, designed to be recognised quickly and worn proudly.

When people wear the badge, it does two things:

The facts behind Zero Tolerance for FGM Day

FGM is recognised internationally as a violation of human rights. Because of that, Zero Tolerance for FGM Day focuses on prevention and ending harm.

UNICEF’s updated estimate states that over 230 million girls and women alive today have been subjected to FGM. In other words, this is not a rare issue. It affects millions of lives across generations.

In the UK, FGM is a criminal offence. When it involves a child, it is child abuse.

If you believe a child is in immediate danger, call 999.

How schools and youth groups can use Not in My Name safely

If you are a school, college, youth group, sports club, or faith community, you can use the track safely. To keep it simple, use this format:

  1. Play the 30 to 60-second cut

  2. Pause and name the safeguarding route in your setting

  3. Repeat one rule: a child should never carry risk alone

After that, you can run a short activity that stays child safe. Ask pupils to finish one sentence:

Not in my name means I will…

Keep answers focused on speaking up, seeking help, and protecting others.
