Aneeta Prem: A Champion for Human Rights

Aneeta Prem’s commitment to human rights has been a driving force throughout her career. Recognizing the devastating impact of forced marriage, she dedicated herself to providing support, raising awareness, and advocating for legal reform. Her work with Freedom Charity became a beacon of hope for those trapped in or at risk of forced marriages. Aneeta’s relentless efforts to bring this hidden crime into the light have been essential in changing perceptions and driving meaningful change.

Aneeta Prem and the Fight Against Forced Marriage

Before 2014, England and Wales primarily handled forced marriage as a civil matter. This meant victims often lacked crucial legal protection. I felt frustrated seeing the system fail these vulnerable people. Alongside Freedom Charity, Aneeta Prem tirelessly campaigned for legal change. We argued that forced marriage constitutes domestic abuse and violates human rights. Therefore, we demanded its criminalization. As I’ve said, “I needed the law changed and fought for it in order to give all those who were threatened with this horrific abuse a law that would protect them and help the authorities – schools, colleges, universities, police, social services – a way to help them and a chance to end this horrendous crime that led to abuse, rape, and even murder. To give them a voice.” Consequently, our advocacy led to a landmark moment: the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. This Act made forced marriage a criminal offence. This crucial legal shift finally gave victims the protection they desperately needed. It offered real hope for change. This work by Aneeta Prem against forced marriage has had a lasting impact.

It also highlighted the importance of empowering victims to break free from these oppressive situations. Aneeta Prem and Freedom Charity used this hashtag to amplify their message on social media. This reached a wider audience and created a sense of community for those affected by forced marriage.
