Help across countries and languages
Freedom Charity is a UK charity. This page helps people find appropriate support when they are outside the UK or when English is not their preferred language.
If you are in immediate danger, contact the emergency services in the country where you are. In the UK, call 999.
Find help where you are
Freedom cannot provide an emergency response in another country. If you are outside the UK, use a trusted local service wherever possible.
Adults and families
The NO MORE Global Directory lists domestic and sexual violence helplines, specialist services and resources across almost every UN-recognised country and territory, including resources relating to FGM.
Children and young people
Child Helpline International lists child helplines in more than 130 countries and territories. Search for the country you are in to find available services.
Forced marriage abroad
The UK Forced Marriage Unit can advise anyone who is in the UK. Overseas, UK consular assistance is available to British nationals, including dual nationals.
If you are already abroad and at risk of forced marriage, contact the nearest British embassy, high commission or consulate if you are eligible for UK consular assistance. The Forced Marriage Unit can be contacted from overseas on +44 (0)20 7008 0151 during its published opening hours.
FGM and overseas help
The Forced Marriage Unit also leads UK consular casework for British nationals overseas who are at risk of female genital mutilation (FGM). For local support in another country, use the country directories above.
Forced marriage information in other languages
The UK Government publishes forced-marriage guidance in several languages. These are official translations of the UK guidance. They explain forced marriage and where to seek help.
The same GOV.UK guidance is also available in Welsh, Dari, Romanian, Sinhala, Turkish and Yiddish, as well as English, Easy Read and British Sign Language.
Spanish, French, Punjabi, Chinese and other languages
Freedom does not currently publish reviewed safeguarding pages in every language, and we do not label machine-translated legal or emergency information as verified guidance.
If you need help in Spanish, French, Punjabi, Chinese or another language, use the country-based directories above to find local services. For a UK forced-marriage concern, the Forced Marriage Unit remains the official specialist route.
Using Freedom from outside the UK
Freedom’s information about UK law, the UK Forced Marriage Unit, police, courts and UK safeguarding duties applies to the UK unless the page says otherwise. Laws and emergency arrangements differ between countries.
You can still use Freedom’s information to understand forced marriage, FGM and Dishonour Abuse, but for urgent or legal help outside the UK use a service in the country where you are.
