Freedom Denied: The Names We Must Remember, by Aneeta Prem MBE, asks what can happen when an ordinary choice — whom to love, what to wear, whether to marry, whether to leave — becomes dangerous.
They were not killed for honour.
They were killed because freedom was denied.— Aneeta Prem
Eight lives.
Five freedoms.
Banaz Mahmod, Shafilea Ahmed, Heshu Yones, Tulay Goren, Rania Alayed, Saman Abbas, Qandeel Baloch and Ahmet Yıldız lived distinct lives. This publication examines the public record, distinguishing established findings from reporting and unresolved allegations.
What the book asks
What was the person trying to do? Who restricted their choice? What did they believe would happen if they resisted? And what could have been recognised earlier?
Its purpose is not simply to remember eight names. It is to help the next person be heard while protection is still possible.
The Five Freedoms
Choose.
Refuse.
Leave.
Learn.
Be.
Aneeta Prem’s Five Freedoms framework helps people ask whether fear or control is preventing somebody from making meaningful choices. It is not a legal or diagnostic test and does not replace statutory safeguarding procedures or specialist risk assessment.
For those with a duty to protect
Written for safeguarding leads, teachers, police, health and social care professionals, housing services, policymakers, journalists and researchers, the book includes professional first-response guidance, sources and a safeguarding action card.
For professional use
The publication complements, but does not replace, statutory duties or local safeguarding procedures. Where family members may form part of the risk, do not alert them before specialist risk assessment.
