Gifts in Wills

Gifts in Wills · Freedom Charity

Help end FGM and forced marriage.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is child abuse. Forcing a child to marry is child abuse. Every child deserves safety, and everyone deserves the freedom to choose their future.

After providing for the people you love, please consider leaving Freedom a gift in your Will. Your gift could help keep our helpline and safeguarding resources available, train the people someone may turn to for help, and reach young people before abuse happens.

Why this matters

Stopping abuse starts before a child is harmed.

Freedom was founded in 2009 to help stop FGM and forced marriage, and to support people already at risk. Our helpline and Freedom App offer routes to help. Our books and school resources help young people recognise coercion and understand their right to choose. We train teachers, police officers, social workers and health professionals to recognise danger and respond safely.

We want girls to stay in education and make their own plans. Through Not in My Name, boys and young men are invited to reject FGM, forced marriage and the attitudes that excuse abuse. Freedom also works to strengthen safeguarding practice and protection. Forced marriage can affect adults and people of any gender.

A gift in your Will could help keep this work going for the children and adults who need it next.

What a lasting gift could support

What your gift could make possible.

A legacy can help with two things that matter: supporting someone who faces danger today and working to prevent another child from facing it tomorrow. Here are examples of Freedom’s work. A gift for our general charitable purposes allows trustees to direct funds where they are needed.

01 · End FGM

Challenge FGM before harm happens.

Support the Red Triangle campaign, our book Cut Flowers and safeguarding resources that help young people, communities and professionals recognise risk and challenge FGM.

02 · End forced marriage

Keep the choice in their hands.

Support But It’s Not Fair, school resources and information that help young people recognise pressure, understand forced marriage and know where to turn. Girls should be free to stay in education and decide their own future.

03 · Support people at risk

Make it easier to ask for help.

Help keep Freedom’s helpline, Freedom App and safeguarding information available to people at risk and to those trying to help them.

04 · Change responses

Help professionals know what to do.

Support training for teachers, police officers, social workers and health professionals, alongside Freedom’s work to improve safeguarding practice and protection.

From Freedom’s founder

A word from Aneeta.

When I started Freedom, I wanted to prevent FGM and forced marriage, not only respond after someone had been harmed.

I want girls to stay in school, make their own plans and decide whether, when and whom they marry. I want boys to grow up knowing that abuse brings no honour to a family. They have a part to play in challenging it and saying, “Not in my name.”

I have trained police officers, teachers and social workers who wanted to help but did not always know what to do. When someone is brave enough to ask for help, the person listening needs to recognise the danger and respond safely. That is why Freedom’s work reaches beyond the classroom.

I do not want this generation of children to become the perpetrators of the future. We must challenge the attitudes that excuse FGM and forced marriage while people are young, and be there for anyone who needs help today.

If you choose to remember Freedom in your Will, thank you. Please look after the people you love first. Your gift could help us keep working towards the future every child deserves: safety, education and the freedom to choose.

Your decision, in your own time

Your loved ones come first.

Your Will is yours to decide. We would be grateful if you considered Freedom after providing for family and the people you care about. There is no minimum gift and no obligation to tell us your decision.

We treat enquiries with care and discretion. For legal or tax advice, speak to an independent solicitor or another appropriately qualified adviser.

A simple next step

How to leave a gift.

You can include Freedom when writing a new Will or ask your solicitor about updating one you already have.

STEP 01

Think about your wishes.

Consider the people and causes you wish to provide for. A charitable gift can be part of your plans.

STEP 02

Choose the kind of gift.

You might leave a share of your estate, a fixed sum or a particular item. Your solicitor can explain the options.

STEP 03

Speak to your solicitor.

Give them Freedom’s registered name and charity number. They can make sure the wording reflects your wishes and the law that applies to you.

Your questions

Questions about leaving a gift?

Do I need to leave a large amount?

No. You can choose the gift that suits your circumstances. Every gift is valued, and there is no minimum.

Do I have to tell Freedom?

No. It is entirely your choice. If you do tell us, we can thank you and answer any questions. You do not need to disclose the value of your gift.

Can I change my mind?

Your wishes remain your own. If they change, speak to your solicitor about updating your Will appropriately.

Can I leave my gift for a particular programme?

Contact us before adding conditions to a gift so we can discuss whether Freedom can meet them in the future. Your solicitor can advise you on the wording.

I already have a Will. Can I add Freedom?

Ask your solicitor whether a codicil or a new Will is right for you. Do not alter a signed Will yourself.

What about Inheritance Tax?

Gifts to qualifying charities are normally exempt from Inheritance Tax. In some cases, a charitable gift may also reduce the rate payable on an estate. Ask your solicitor or tax adviser how the rules apply to you.

I’m a solicitor or executor. How do I get in touch?

Use the private form below or contact Freedom. Begin your message with “Solicitor or executor enquiry”.
